The biggest problem: the disclosures have been so uniformly lousy that it’s been difficult for investors tell the difference in the way firms use these instruments. If the FASB has its way, investors will have a better chance at distinguishing risk-managing firms from the risk-lovers by the end of this year. The Board expects to amp up the disclosures around all credit derivatives; if they succeed, the credit default swaps market might look different in the coming months.
